PROJECT
The Earth.Works
A library, such as this, reflects how knowledge has always been organised, structured and delivered.
Places of learning use the same structure by dividing knowledge into faculties or subjects. The "books" are compartmentalised accordingly. Syllabuses plot how the knowledge is gradually released, book by book.
Imagine this is your personal library. It contains all the wisdom and knowledge you need to know, to be "educated". Each book, represents a small topic in one specific subject. Cell Structure in Biology for instance.
Now imagine this image of the library is replaced by the image of a large jigsaw puzzle. Where each jigsaw piece is like a book. A large jigsaw puzzle can seem daunting, but even more so if the image on the box was missing.
The Earth.Works project is that missing image. A map or framework that removes subject boundaries and presents knowledge on a single infinite canvas.
As the learner studies they are able to place each piece of knowledge in context, making learning intuitive, engaging and interconnected.
The consequence of this is that our brains no longer store this knowledge in fragments thus making retention and recall much easier.
Interdisciplinary exploration which was previously stifled, is easily accessible and curiosity flourishes.
The project set out to build this framework, a vast Knowledge Map or Graph. A visual map set out on an infinite canvas that organises knowledge across time and space and backed by a neural network.

Traditionally, delivery of knowledge by subjects restricts interdisciplinary curiosity and research

Designing the Map
An interdisciplinary knowledge organiser
The scalable canvas now familiar on many mapping apps allows so much information to be accessed, at speed and in such detail. The more you zoom in the more detail you get.
Over the past 500 years or so, humans have increasingly applied their wisdom and reason to stare out into the stars and to look back in time. To deduce what events have taken place and to determine the scientific principles that apply to this universe. Humans have stared inwards into the cells that make up life and studied the chemistry that makes those cells function.
With each new discovery, another piece of the jigsaw is added to the big picture that is slowly being revealed. One of the purposes of this project is to somehow visualise this masterpiece and grasp the magnitude of time and space. To make the unimaginable, imaginable and to present information in a way that gives a different perspective on our planet and how it works.
The existence of humans on this Earth has come about as a result of a large number of extraordinary events that have resulted in a planet that can support life. Built into Map are these pivotal events that plot how life has arisen from the dust and gas on the surface of this planet and then evolved into a species that can study where it has come from.
Benefits of
Knowledge Organisers
The Big Picture
Seeing the big picture before you begin your studies gives you an understanding of the task ahead. You can identify which areas you are currently studying and which areas you should revisit.
Memory
"The amount of knowledge and information our brains need to store is immense. By having a mental framework where new knowledge can be organized and seeing how it connects to other pieces of information, you become much more efficient."
Retrieval
Knowing how knowledge fits together and where it is stored stops fragmentation at the source. This means that retaining information and retriving it is so much easier.
Gaps
Identifying gaps in one knowledge is almost impossible without knowing what the big picture looks like. A missed lesson or one that needs to be revisited can be quickly identified and acted upon.

A digital studymate
-
The rise of artificial intelligence has raised profound questions about the role of humans in the decades ahead.
-
With information—and in many cases, knowledge—so readily available, we must ask: "Is rote learning really the best way to differentiate one learner from another"?
-
Curiosity and wonder should be nurtured, not suppressed by the exam factory mentality.
The Earth.Works Project is a digital studymate, powered by a neural network. A companion to all learners that sits in their pocket or on their laptop, there to support, explain and stimulate.
